Xylitol (also called birch sugar) is extremely toxic to dogs. It causes a rapid, massive insulin release leading to life-threatening hypoglycemia within 30-60 minutes. Higher doses cause liver failure. Found in sugar-free gum, candy, peanut butter, and baked goods. As little as 0.1g/kg can be fatal.
